1950's Trivia Answers
50'S TRIVIA ANSWERS......

Part 1: #1 - Sonny Bono, who also worked for Art Rupe's Specialty label as a promotion man....#2 - WMCA/570, WINS/1010, and WMGM/1050....#3 - Sonny James, who was known as 'The Southern Gentleman'....#4 - 'Dedicated To The One I Love' only reached #83 in 1959, but peaked at #3 a year and a half later.....#5 Bobby Darin's 'Mack The Knife' was considered so popular that NYPD officials felt the tune possibly played a role in a (pardon the pun) sharp rise in stabbings....#6 - The Disk Jockey convention in Miami, Florida in March of '59 and it's resulting adverse publicity was the incident that kicked off the payola investigations by the U.S. Congress which looked into huge gifts of cash and items paid to DJ's in exchange for airplay of selected records....#7 - Most popular fella, Elvis. Most popular female, Patti Page, and most successful group, The Platters....#8 - Billy Ward & The Dominoes....#9 - In March of '59, Berry's good friend Marv Johnson released 'Come To Me'. The song was distributed nationally by United Artists, but Gordy's Tamla label got all the sales in Detroit....#10 - 'Sincerely', by the McGuire Sisters.

Part 2: #1 - The process was known as 'kineoscoping', in which the actual broadcast output was filmed for posterity....#2 - KJR, Channel 95 in Seattle, played rock and roll well into the 80's before going to an all-Sports format. Luminaries including Pat O'Day, Larry Lujack, Jerry Kay and Gary Lockwood all spent time on Harbor Island in Seattle....#3 - The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) would not play American Rock n' Roll except in limited cases. The kids wanted the stuff made popular in the colonies, thus 'Radio Caroline' and its ilk came to be....#4 - At the beginning of each episode of 'Gunsmoke' starring James Arness as Matt Dillon, Conrad's voice provided the narration. Conrad incidentally, played Dillon in the radio version of the show....#5 - None other than Joni James....#6 - The movie was 'Mister Roberts', an unheralded film which became one of the great all-time classics....#7 - Buddy MacGregor, who became owner of several radio stations in the thriving town of Round Rock, Texas....#8 - James Garner, who played Bret Maverick, sat out more than a few episodes because of salary differences. As a result, actor Jack Kelly was brought in to play brother Bart Maverick. Thus, Bret and Bart came to be....#9 - Regis Philbin was a news anchor for San Diego radio station KDEO, programmed for a time by Ultmate Oldies contributor Mel Hall....#10 - WJZ-TV in Baltimore decided to do a local version of the show hosted by radio DJ Buddy Deane. When the show got underway, Deane's amazing propensity for predicting hit records and breaking new dances for the kids, quickly made him an entity unto himself both to viewers and in the record biz. ABC got wind of the phenomenon and sent then unknown Roone Arledge down to Baltimore to film a pilot network show featuring Deane, but the idea was scrapped, largely at Deane's behest, as he felt with Clark already established nationally with the kids, it made no sense to do a similar program for adults. As usual, Buddy's instincts were right on the money.
