The concept for Ultimate Oldies Radio was created one snowy Sunday afternoon in February, 1999 at a hotel lobby near BWI Airport in Baltimore. I was introduced to a fellow named Jimmy Williams. We instantly hit it off and remained close friends. In April, 1999, the first version of the website was launched.
For the next several years, much time was invested in Jimmy's creating pages as I wrote the text. By 2001 the site began to get noticed. Folks were visiting to read the information and some were understanding what we were trying to do.
Still, we were running into challenges of how to produce and stream audio. Finally by 2004, after some valuable assistance by a fellow named Dave Klepes, we began producing shows.
We set up studios early that year at my rowhouse in Baltimore. 506 Brunswick Street was a two story dwelling in the middle of the block. Behind the home was a factory, then behind that a lot overgrown with weeds, which descended to railroad tracks, crossing over to a small patch of woods which ended at a stream called Gwynns Falls. A pretty gritty neck of the woods. And it was a perfect scenario to come up with the name of our location.
Brunswick-On-The-Gwynns. Which you will hear mentioned at the end of the shows posted on occasion from our archives.
Sounds rather elegant, don't you think?
We've also set up studios and produced programs since then in a number of places, including....
Maple Valley, Monroe, and Seattle, Washington (2006-2008 and 2009-2010)
Dothan, Alabama (2008-09)
Hanover, Pennsylvania (2010-Present)
The most enjoyable aspect of this experience throughout the years has been the meeting and making of new friends from all over the world. Folks who love the programs and have contributed dozens of concepts as well that we have produced.
Many of these folks have stayed with us and have encouraged us to come back.
We have at times found ourselves not in a position to sufficiently maintain the efforts needed in producing these shows and as a result, went into hiatus. Mow in the Spring of 2020, we have returned.
Lord willing, may we stay around for a good while to come. And we hope you will be with us.
